About our independent nursery school
Teacher Speak
Our Team of Passionate Teachers

Our independent, inclusive, non-profit nursery school has been partnering with passionate teachers, committed parents, and the community at large since we were established in 1956. For over 65 years, we have worked together to provide a child-centred early learning experience for young children in a nurturing, safe, stimulating, creative, dynamic and richly resourced environment.

At Roosevelt Park Pre-Primary, we believe that education is about the journey rather than the destination. Using various teaching philosophies, including Montessori and Reggio, our children actively explore the whole school environment in their own time and in their own way, discovering and learning as they play.

As a registered Nonprofit Organisation, parents share in the learning to play journey as active members of our school community. With their richly diverse backgrounds, our parents enjoy involvement in both formal roles, (such as acting on committees and governing bodies), and informal ones (such as volunteering for and attending social events and fundraisers.)

We welcome children from ages 18 months to 6 years.

Our toddler group (of a maximum of 14 children) is offered between 3 and 5 days a week, and these little ones enjoy their own playground, as well as a dedicated teacher’s assistant who works alongside their experienced teacher. The toddler group welcomes those who are still in nappies and potty training.

From ages 3 to 6 (Grade R), our kids attend school full-time, where we strive to give them a safe, stimulating, creative, and dynamic start, readying them for Grade 1.

We are proud to act as a feeder school for multiple fantastic Public and Private schools in Johannesburg. Historically, Roosevelt Park Pre-Primary children have gone on to thrive at various Primary schools, including Blairgowrie Primary School, De La Salle Holy Cross College, Craighall Primary School, Auckland Park Preparatory, and Parkview Junior School.

With our strong community ethos, we remain in touch with our Alumni and applaud the multiple successes of our past pupils as they progress through Primary School and High School.

We are proud of our history and love welcoming back children, and grandchildren of past RPPS kids.

Our standard school hours are from 07h45 to 12h30, with aftercare available until 16h00.

We are inclusive of children with different abilities, and do what we can to provide them with a holistic, nurturing, richly resourced pre-primary environment.

During their school day, RPPS children enjoy connecting at circle or ring time, creating, learning through various different mediums, a mid-morning snack (lovingly prepared by our housekeeper Lucy), plenty of play and outside time, and a piece of fruit and story-time at the end of the morning. As well as music, dance, library, obstacle courses, creative activities, science, movement and developmental play.

We welcome visits from outside organisations (such as animal parks and Hooked on Books) throughout the year, and have various afterschool extra murals on offer from trusted independent companies and teachers – including pottery, dance, Edudrama, and Buzz.

We also offer a Friday afternoon Playgroup with our qualified teachers on duty. This is open to our wider community, not just current children at RPPS and is available to children between 18 months and 5 years. It is a wonderful opportunity for parents and caregivers to connect with each other while their children spend a happy afternoon engaging in fun early childhood activities.

Throughout the year, our parent committee arranges multiple social and fundraising events – including mini walks, childrens’ theatre performances, book evenings, monthly gate sales, school parties, and workshops and talks of interest by guest speakers.

Our wonderful playground is also available to parents and their friends to hire as a childrens’ party venue, with everything in place for a fun-filled and easy event!

I knew RPPS was the right school for my children when my eldest son came home covered in mud and explained to me what Gravity was! Learning through Play has been the rock all 4 of my kids have stood on since then. Having a structured but not formal day at pre-school meant they were more than ready for Blairgowrie Primary school, where they all excelled in all areas of school - academic, sporting and many other extra murals. They were confident enough to try anything! And when they reached the Parktown High Schools - it was remarked at both that you could always spot an RPPS child!

My own earliest memories are of riding my bicycle around the Roosevelt Park Pre-Primary school for our very special bike days and so my relationship of over 36 years with RPPS started. After my memories, I entrusted RPPS with my own 3 children and couldn’t have been happier with the family atmosphere, the philosophy of play and kindness the school embodies.

The philosophy of learning through play moulds the child holistically. It feels more like family than school where there is trust, honesty and openness. A great balance of indoor and outdoor activities allowing children to socialise, problem solve and learn valuable life skills. RPPS develops independence, confidence and adaptability in preparation for BIG school.
