A wonderful sensory play activity with children experiencing their sense of touch through their feet exploring different textures and responses as they made their way on foot through various trays and along surfaces. It was interesting to observe how their play spontaneously developed over time. Initially they enjoyed more simple experiential play but then began experimenting, and investigating other possibilities. The language of play moved from physical or locomotor, to experiential, to investigative, to discovery, to creative and eventually imaginative play. The exploratory play became pretty messy so add that into the mix too. It is the journey of play that is important and valuable, not the end result or the product.
